February 17th 2024

Sadly we have learned of the passing of one of our Clubs most prominent cricketers and committee member Allan Sherratt who sadly passed away last week. Allan helped to progress our Club at all levels both on and off the field of play.

Many thanks  Allan you will be greatly missed.

It is with much regret that

POTT  SHRIGLEY CRICKET CLUB

has recently learned of the death of

Nicholas Latham our groundsman.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends.

We are sorry to learn the passing of Peter Chadwick. Unfortunately Peter had been ill for some years now. Always a happy, positive and helpful member of the team. Peter was one of the classical style batsmen, always whenever possible playing with the full face of the bat. All his family were long time supporters of the Club, being involved on teas and as Vice Presidents from the late 1960s until the 1980s. Peter was a big thinker on tactics and became 2nd XI Vice Captain in 1970. He will be sadly missed by us all.

IN MEMORY OF DERRICK BROOKE

IN MEMORY OF
DERRICK BROOKE

After the last home a dedication ceremony was held concerning a Weather Vane, in memory of Derrick Brooke who had spent a lifetime of work  both on and off the field in promoting the improvement of facilities at Pott Shrigley Cricket Club.

Over sixty people attended the ceremony including many past players, friends, family and club members. Chaiman Andrew Hart recalled many events from Derrick’s cricketing life both on and off the field of play recalling his E,C.B. Lifetime Achievment Award in 2008. Derrick’s son Ian, a past Team Captain and Cheshire League official, made an emotional reply  thanking the club and all who donated to the memorial, saying the image on the weather vane captured the spirit of Derrick’s cricketing life.

Euro  ’15   Qualifiers –

Pott Shrigley made their annual trip to Sheffield to take on Cassabanka in an eagerly anticipated football match. There was a good representation of first, second and Sunday players, although some late drop-outs left Shrigley with ten men to start the game (traffic meant Mathers could only make it with half an hour gone).

In a hotly contested game, Pott were to come out on the wrong side of a seven goal thriller, losing 4-3 to an 89th minute strike. This came after a stirring fightback, with Pott battling back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to draw level thanks to a great left foot strike from Mathers and two smart finishes from Jason Hanaghan, the second from the spot after the marauding Cleaver had been felled.

There may be another game or two in the next couple of months so please keep an eye out for those. Talent is not necessary and it would be good to see more people come along and have a game.

Matt Todd.

It is with much regret that we pass on the sad news that Margaret Hart, wife of our Chairman Michael Hart, has died after a long battle with cancer.    Margaret has been a long time supporter of the Club attending functions, making countless cricket teas and cakes for our fundraising events. She  will be greatly missed.

Our thoughts and sympathy are with the Hart family at this very sad time.

Another past Club member Jim Berry, has also recently passed away. Jim was an outstanding all-rounder on the field and who, off the field, was always a great helper working many hours on several joinery and painting projects in the pavilion. Again our thoughts and sympathy go to his wife Beryl.

GRANT AND PAVILION

We are very pleased to announce that we have been offered a substantial sum from The Heritage Lottery Fund,  towards the renovation and extension of our Pavilion.

The good news is that building work on the new Extension should begin before the end of January 2014 and if all goes to plan (does it ever) it should take around six weeks or  so. A lot of course will  depend on the weather. Let us hope for a drier spell over the next few weeks.

Because the grant will not cover all we plan to do, we will be organising extra events in the coming months, so please try to give as much support to these as you can.
