R.A. FAIRHALL (BOB)
It is with deep regret that we announce the death of Bob Fairhall.
One of the giants in our Club's history.
Bob Fairhall's playing career with Pott Shrigley spanned 25 years. Arriving in 1958, as a left arm quick bowler, he soon made his mark. His football training helped to spur on others in the Club, to take fitness seriously, thus improving our cricket as well. By 1964 he was 1st XI Captain and though outspoken at some A.G.M.s, his focus was always on improving the Club and its performances.
Throughout the '60s and '70s Bob became the Club's main strike bowler, taking over 50 wickets in a season -6 times. In 1967 he took 94 wickets and ten years later topped this with 101 wickets.
His aggressive bowling style laid the foundation for the Club's most successful years as Pott Shrigley won most of the silverware over several years as members of the Cheshire Conference. His 8 - 11 against Lindow in 1967 being his best retun.
It was Bob Fairhall, in 1966, who called for a local Knock-out Cup, played between the local Clubs. He approached the Macclesfield Express who agreed to sponsor a local 20 over competition. He eventually played a large part in Pott Shrigley winning the trophy in 1977.
Bob's physique came into play with his batting. His big hitting, lower down the order, helped in many tight corners. The fact that he featured in Club record stands for the 7th, 9th and 10th wickets proves his worth as an all-rounder.
Off the field Bob played an active role in Club affairs, being Chairman or Vice-Cairman from 1975-85. His several years as our Cheshire Cricket League Representative eventually took him to an appointment as CCL Chairman, a position he was very proud of. Bob proved an ideal ambassador for Pott Shrigley and Cheshire cricket in general.
Bob Fairhall took over 800 wickets over 25 years at Club level and spent a large part of his life organising cricket for others to enjoy, he will be greatly missed.
